Agathocles

Biography

1985, a quarter of a century ago, Thrash Metal was the most brutal thing around, Death Metal was still an embryo but a handful of guys on the planet were putting together the idea of something even more extreme: Grindcore. Deeply rooted in the Punk and Hardcore scenes, with social values and a strong appetite to do it the Metal way… In England, there was a starting band called Napalm Death. In Belgium, it was Agathocles. Both are still around all these years later. Both are still redefining the genre with each and every release. The rest is history… Napalm Death went on to commercial success, Agathocles delved deeper and deeper into the underground scene, helping the more they could, playing DIY gigs all around the world, releasing splits with probably more than a hundred bands (among which Looking For An Answer, Rot and Unholy Grave)…

Agathocles is probably the most prolific band around (it’s doubtful themselves know the exact amount of stuff they’ve released during their whole career), Agathocles has released only nine full length albums, but each one is a milestone and 1995′s “Razor sharp daggers” is no exception. For long out of print, it has been re-released by Bones Brigade records in 2000. Since then they found a home on Morbid records, then Displeased records, through which they released their latest albums.

Agathocles play their own kind of Grindcore, they dub it Mincecore, dealing with social matters, nature, human values and ethics. Nice people, hu? Well, just listen to their stuff (in the surprising case you still wouldn’t know them!) and you’d hear how angry could nice people get when it comes to playing the stuff they invented… a quarter of a century ago!
