Keith Urban released his new album, The Speed of Now: Part One, and the track “Say Something” is, in part, a promise to his marriage to Nicole Kidman.

  • On Sept. 19, Keith Urban released his latest album, The Speed of Now: Part One.
  • In particular, the track “Say Something” is a reflection of his childhood and a promise to his marriage.
  • Urban explained that he was “terrible at relationships” before he met his wife, Nicole Kidman.

On Sept. 19, Keith Urban released his latest album, The Speed of Now: Part One. And while some tracks are airy and fun (“One Too Many,” “Tumbleweed,”) many are deeply personal to him. In particular, the track “Say Something” is a reflection of his childhood, a promise to his marriage, and a mantra for the rest of the world.

In an interview with Variety, the country star about a particular line in the song: “Intimacy’s so hard for me and I get stuck, but I don’t wanna be like my father was, scared to rock the boat, never speaking up. I wanna live my truths wide open.”

Urban went on to explain that he was raised in a home where communication wasn’t encouraged, a practice that damaged many of his adult relationships—until he met his wife, Nicole Kidman.

“It took marrying Nic to learn all about that, learn about how to really communicate properly and speak and say things,” he explained. “I could write a good love song, but I was terrible at relationships, because I didn’t really know.” He continued, “I’m glad that our girls are in a very different environment where we talk about things all the time.” He and Kidman share two daughters, Sunday Rose, 12, and Faith Margaret, 9.

He went on to explain that the song also resonates with the current state of the world. “I think there are times where silence is dangerous, and we need to speak up—and I’m glad a lot of that is happening around the world finally right now. It’s imperative,” he said.

When the album released, Kidman and their daughters threw Urban a sweet celebration, which he shared on Instagram. There was a cake printed with the album art, flowers, and a balloon banner that spelled the record’s name. “My magical angel wife and daughters- showered me with the most colorful love on the release of T.S.O.N today,” he wrote. “I loooove you baby, and you too Sunnie and Faith soooo much!!!!!!”

Kidman herself is enjoying the album, especially the song “With You,” which is pretty clearly written about her. She’s promoted the record on Instagram multiple times. “Sound on… and all the way up 😉 Listening to With You #TheSpeedOfNow with this view xx @KeithUrban 💕,” she captioned a photo of the sun setting behind lush green hills. Under another photo of her kissing his cheek, she wrote, “Listening to Keith’s new album feels a little something like this ❤️️.”
