Wedge issues are playing an increasingly important role in the battle for the 1st Congressional District, as incumbent Democrat Chris Pappas highlights abortion rights and Republican challenger Matt Mowers drives home his support for law enforcement.>> Download the FREE WMUR appSitting down with leading pro-choice women on the seacoast, Chris Pappas said legal access to abortion hinges on this election and he said his opponent will vote to take away a right established by the Supreme Court almost 50 years ago. “I’m running against an opponent who is very proud of his opposition to Roe v. Wade and the right to choose,” Pappas said. “I think the women of New Hampshire and voters across this state deserve to know where we stand.”For that opponent, Matt Mowers, the focus right now is squarely on showing his support for law enforcement.Today, the young GOP challenger who worked in the State Department under President Trump touted the endorsement of the New England Police Benevolent Association. “They’ve said it pretty clearly, Chris Pappas has undermined law enforcement in our state,” Mowers said. “I’m going to be an advocate for law enforcement because I know that will make for safer communities here in New Hampshire.”On the abortion issue, Mowers is pro-life and said he wants to seek common ground regarding abortion in case of rape or incest. He contends Pappas is trying to create a distraction.Regarding his support for the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, Pappas said a vote for reform is not a vote against police.“I’m going to keep fighting for resources for law enforcement in New Hampshire, as well as ensuring we can have the kind of conversations that can move us forward,” Pappas said.The candidates are expected to continue hammering on these issues through the final weeks of the campaign.
